  • How I missed out on £50. A night to remember in more ways than one!

This year the Rotary Club of Bradford West’s Annual Sports Personality Dinner was held at the Dubrovnik Hotel in Bradford. This was a change of venue which was forced upon the Rotary Club just two weeks before the event. On behalf of everyone who attended , I would like to give thanks to President Carol for her negotiating skills, to Secretary Brian and Kathleen for cutting their holiday short and returning home to oversee and coordinate the change of venue, to Treasurer Bob for his input and financial supervision and above all to Ron and Sandra Wilkinson for the untold disruption to their lives and plans while the change was taking place. To you all I would say ‘Thank you’, it was a great success and a wonderful evening.

Over 150 people attended and we started with a meal consisting of Vegetable Soup, Loin of Pork with vegetables and potatoes and topped off with Bread and Butter pudding and custard.

After such a ‘hearty meal’, the ‘stand up’ bingo provided everyone with an opportunity to stretch their legs; some standing for much longer than many others! It was good to see Clive Preston back in our midst again. True to his character, he insisted on swapping the bingo ticket that I had sold him, so I swapped it with mine, (unfortunately for me) I then sold it to Sue, the lady sat next to me and she promptly became the joint winner of the first prize and shared £100! Despite having a winning ticket in my procession for just a few minutes, I am consoled by the fact that it could have been much worse – Clive could have won it and we would never have heard the last of it!!!

The Speakers on the night were Dean Windass, former Bradford City player and comedian Martin Gold. Dean spoke eloquently, with great humour and conviction. His self-deprecating and honest speech endeared the whole audience towards him. Even those listening who had little or no knowledge of his football career could not help but relate to him and the ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ of his life. If you are reading this Dean, I would like to ‘Thank You’ for your honesty and your willingness to let people learn from your experiences. I would also like to ‘Thank You’ for the pleasure you brought to so many people watching you play throughout your career.

The Comedian, Martin Gold rounded of the evening perfectly with humour for all tastes and backgrounds.

Great company, good food, insightful and humourous speakers and we raised money for Charity too - It doesn’t get any better than that. Thank you to everyone who attended.

    Robert
