  • Teddies for Tragedies

Over the last few months the ladies of Harden and Wilsden Women’s Institutes in conjunction with The Rotary Club of Bradford West, have been hard at work knitting “teddies for tragedies” out of any spare wool to make teddies to be included in Rotary Aquaboxes. These are robust plastic boxes containing over 60 items of humanitarian aid plus an Aqua Filter which can produce at least 18,000 litres of safe drinking water. Along with the WI ladies, Ann Preston of The Ring O’ Bells in Thornton has enlisted her lady friends to knit teddies and donate other cuddly animals for this project. Collectively they have produced around 50 teddies, cuddly toys and blankets which will now be taken by our past president, Dr. Anne Raine to Aquabox headquarters where Rotary volunteers will fill thousands of boxes ready to be sent to any part of the world where a disaster has occurred.

Doctors who treat children in third world countries have found that children who have their own teddies to cuddle get better much quicker than those who don’t have one. If you would like to organise a knitting “teddies for tragedies” group you can download the pattern from the Aquabox web site below.

The current disaster in Nepal where thousands are now homeless after experiencing two massive earthquakes in the past three weeks with many aftershocks makes the ladies efforts that much more important. Aquabox have sent 500 boxes since Christmas and have 600+ boxes ready for sending with The Ghurkhas and the RAF as soon as they get clearance.

Should you wish to donate to the Nepal disaster cheques can be sent to Aquabox, P.O.Box 5398, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 4ZP or donate on line on the Aquabox web site
