This area of service relates to the activities that Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in their community. Particular emphasis is given to helping children, needy families, the aged, the handicapped, and those most in need of assistance. Rotarians strive to promote the ideal of service in their personal, business, and community lives.
Examples of our activities include:
Our ongoing project "Contact the Elderly" (see below).
Annual Senior Citizen trips to the Victoria Theatre Halifax, where we take some of those who don’t regularly go out, to see a show. Ninety two of us went last time.
Toy collections. Queensbury school have been collecting new and nearly new toys for the Gingerbread Group for the last ten years, and our members take the toys to take to Gingerbread each year just before Christmas.
The annual Christmas Carol Concert at St. John's Clayton, usually with the Clayton C of E school choir and Notability performing. The money received from the collection is divided between the Church and Rotary charities.
Blood pressure testing days held at local supermarkets or large outlets.
In the summer we are usually involved with Southfield School (which is for children with special needs). Events include a "Kid's Day Out" at Ponderosa in Heckmondwike, and a Sports Day.
We also help to raise money to pay for these events. For example a Scotch Malt Whisky Tasting evening raised over £600.
Seven of our members sporting their Movember moustaches which they grew during the month of November 2012 to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. Around £900 was raised. Of course the Mo Sistas had to get in on the act.

CONTACT THE ELDERLY GROUP
In Sept. 2009 certain members of our Rotary Club had a meeting with the area director of Contact the Elderly Mary Robinson and discussed the possibility of forming our own elderly group. This group would consist of elderly people who were lonely, needing company and different surroundings. This group would be recommended by Social Services or Age Concern in the main.
By Dec. 2009 we had a group up and running and our first Tea Party took place.
We needed a group of volunteers willing to give up 2 to 3 hours on one Sunday afternoon a month to drive our elderly guests to and from their destination and another group to host a Tea Party once a year. We now have a large pool of volunteer drivers and a team of 10 hosts. This works well, we have 10 Tea Parties a year and 2 annual outings.
We now have a thriving group of 7 elderly people, 4 of whom are in their 90’s, who look forward tremendously to their Sundays with us and are extremely upset if for any reason they have to miss a meeting.
Bradford West Rotarians and their partners who are involved with this activity get a great deal of pleasure from keeping in touch and being involved with our elderly guests. Our group organiser has received a thank you card from Lady Jasmine Cavendish, President of the Contact the Elderly Organisation.
